A Loan Portfolio for Women that Offers Higher Returns with Lower Risk

IDB Invest has published a case study debrief for Banco ADOPEM, a privately held financial institution in the Dominican Republic, which represents an exception to the gender disparities usually found in the loan portfolios of financial institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The analysis, which includes more than 170,000 loans issued mostly between January 2022 and May 2024, shows that female clients of Banco ADOPEM request and are approved for higher loan amounts than men with similar characteristics. The data shows that interest rates were identical for men and women, as also were the payment behavior of both groups. Finally, it is concluded that in the case of Banco ADOPEM, the loan portfolio for women offers higher returns with lower risk.
