Amazon launches reforestation initiative aimed at restoring Brazil’s rainforest
09/04/2021 Since 3 years

Amazon in partnership with global environmental organisation The Nature Conservancy, announced the launch of Agroforestry and Restoration Accelerator, a carbon removal project in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest focused on reforestation and regenerative agroforestry.

The project will initially support 3,000 farmers in the Brazilian Amazon state of Pará. It aims to restore nearly 20,000 hectares over a three-year period, removing up to 10 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by 2050.

The Nature Conservancy will work with the World Agroforestry Centre and civil society organisations to implement the project. The programme will provide farmers with a source of income from the sale of crops such as cocoa and additionally facilitate the restoration of degraded cattle pastures on forest land.

The initiative aims to protect one of the world’s most endangered forests and will seek innovative methods of forestry development. It will explore digital and satellite-based technologies, as well as new methodologies to support farmers, promote sustainable forest commodity markets and quantify and monitor carbon sequestration.
