Brazil proposes global integration of carbon markets at COP30

10/07/2025 Since 4 weeks

In the run-up to the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), scheduled for November 2025 in Belém (Pará State, Brazil), the host country has proposed the creation of the “Open Coalition for Carbon Market Integration”, which aims to harmonize standards and link existing carbon credit trading systems to boost liquidity, predictability, and transparency in the sector.; and moreover, with the central purpose of accelerating the decarbonization of economies and incentivizing the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

The voluntary Coalition will promote the adoption of new technologies and innovative solutions for decarbonization, meanwhile enabling the exchange of experiences among participating countries. It will also establish new production standards that prioritize products with lower carbon content. In addition, the initiative allocates a portion of the revenues generated from the distribution of decarbonization quotas through a process of “revenue recycling,” ensuring a fair transition.

For reference, the article mentions that currently approximately 80 countries or jurisdictions already have a direct carbon pricing system, out of which nearly 40 countries have a regulated carbon trading system in place.
