Brazilian government moves forward with discussions on carbon credit market
05/17/2022 Since 2 years

Brazil’s Minister of the Environment, Joaquim Leite, announced that the federal government is preparing to create a national regulated market for carbon credits, in order to be able to export credits that have high environmental quality and generate income for emission reduction projects.

Brazil seeks to position itself as an important exporter of carbon credits by leveraging its natural and economic characteristics, which allow it to generate credits from different sources such as solid waste, poultry farming, pig farming, sugar and alcohol, among others. According to Leite, the main sectors to benefit from the regulated carbon market will be the forestry sector (conservation and recovery of native vegetation) and the waste treatment sector (through projects to reduce emissions from organic waste, especially from agriculture).
