Colombia pledges green hydrogen roadmap and foresees $2.5 billion in investments
08/13/2021 Since 3 years

Colombia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy, with support from the IDB, published a draft hydrogen roadmap document. The project aims to boost development in the country with an estimated investment of more than $2.5 billion by the end of the decade.

The roadmap takes as its starting point an analysis of production capacity, demand, export potential and regulation to propose a hydrogen deployment plan for Colombia. The project aims to install at least 1 GW of electrolysis capacity by 2030, in addition to promoting the large-scale adoption of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. It also stipulates the goal of producing at least 50 kilotons of blue hydrogen from new methane steam reforming plants. In terms of demand, a fleet of at least 1,500 light fuel cell vehicles for passenger and freight transport is expected.

The start of production in Colombia could take place in areas where recent renewable projects are located, close to the sea. Specifically, in the departments of La Guajira and Cesar where the necessary infrastructure is available.
