Uruguay launches green hydrogen roadmap to 2040
06/14/2022 Since 2 years

The Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM) of Uruguay presented the long-term roadmap for the implementation and development of green hydrogen and its derivatives in the country. The development of the national green hydrogen roadmap incorporated a consultation process with public, private and academic stakeholders. The initiative has the technical support of the state-owned companies UTE and Ancap and the IDB.

According to the roadmap, the potential of Uruguay’s resources and the established goals make it possible to reach a turnover of up to 2100 million dollars per year by 2040, driven by the export markets of synthetic fuels and hydrogen, as well as by the use of hydrogen for the deep decarbonization of the economy. This would require the installation of 20 GW in renewables and 10 GW in electrolyzers. Additionally, it is estimated that there is a potential to generate more than 30,000 quality jobs.

Among the concrete short-term actions regarding this new industry is the launching of the Hydrogen Sectoral Fund together with the Technological Laboratory of Uruguay (LATU) and the National Agency for Research and Innovation (ANII). Ten proposals related to green hydrogen have been presented in the call for proposals.
