- Practical guide to sustainable financial instruments for public credit and treasury offices
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has published a new learning tool to share experiences and best practices in the issuance of sustainable financial instruments (thematic bonds, sustainability-linked bonds, among others), with the purpose of facilitating and encouraging the participation of new issuers in the growing sustainable financing market and contributing to the transition towards a more resilient and sustainable economy in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The document was prepared within the framework of the Debt Management and Green Financing Working Group from the Regional Climate Change Platform of Economy and Finance Ministries of LAC.
The guide includes a summary of thematic bond market trends in the LAC region; the description of the key elements of these debt instruments and the steps required for their issuance; the analysis of three successful cases studies of sovereign thematic bond issuances from Mexico, Uruguay and Chile. Finally, the authors present a summary of best market practices, perspectives, benefits and challenges to address sustainable financing and investment needs.
