UK and IDB Sign Joint Statement for Sustainable Development of Amazon Basin
04/18/2023 Since 1 year

Within the framework of the Amazon Initiative, which mobilizes public and private resources and coordinates financial and technical assistance to stimulate sustainable and inclusive development models in the Amazon, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) together with the Government of the United Kingdom (UK) signed a joint statement to promote the sustainable development of the Amazon basin with special attention to the protection of forests, nature and biodiversity.

The Amazon Bioeconomy and Forest Management Multi-Donor Trust Fund has received a 5.8 million dollars contribution from the UK through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS). This Fund aims to increase the mobilization of resources from the public and private sectors to support the region and focuses on three main areas: i) reducing pressure on forest ecosystems through better environmental governance and sustainable economic alternatives; ii) empower small and medium land users to protect and sustainably use forests and develop regulatory frameworks; and iii)  scale up financial solutions to reduce deforestation and ecosystem degradation from commodity supply chains, benefiting small and medium-sized farmers.
