European Union and Brazil announce 2 billion euros investments in Brazilian green hydrogen
06/12/2023 Since 1 year

During a meeting in Brasilia, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, announced the launching of a new Global Gateway flagship project that will invest 2 billion euros to support Brazil’s production of green hydrogen and to promote energy efficiency in the industry. No further details on the programme were disclosed.

Brazil has a great potential for renewable hydrogen as it produces 87% of its electricity from renewable sources. A recent mapping conducted by H2 Brazil, a project resulting from a partnership between the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy, has identified at least 42 green hydrogen production projects in the country of different sizes and stages of development.

The European Union’s Global Gateway strategy aims to boost smart, clean and secure links in digital, energy and transport sectors and to strengthen health, education and research systems across the world, mobilizing up to 300 billion euros of investments for sustainable and high-quality projects.
