The GIIN, Global Impact Investing Network, produced a report, with the financial support of Nuveen, which estimates the size of the global impact investing market to be 1.2 trillion dollars. “Impact investments” are defined as investments made with the intention to generate positive, measurable social and environmental impact alongside a financial return. GIIN’s Research Team screened and analyzed data from over 3,000 public and private market asset owners and managers to elaborate this report.

The report highlights two areas of market development that are becoming increasingly prevalent: green bonds and corporate impact investing. The authors conclude that impact investment is one of the most powerful tools the world has at its disposal to build a just, inclusive society and a sustainable future and that urgent action and vast allocations of capital are required in the present moment in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 and to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
