IDB to support the LAC region in Implementing the new Global Biodiversity Framework
12/13/2022 Since 1 year

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has participated in the 15th United Nations Conference on Biological Diversity (COP15) held in Montreal during December 2022.

During the period 2015 to 2020, IDB has invested more than 800 million dollars in 28 projects with nature-based solutions components. Furthermore, it is estimated that a nature-positive economy can generate 10 trillion dollars worth of business opportunities through the transformation of the food, infrastructure and energy sectors.

In this way, IDB is working to implement the Joint Declaration on Nature, People and the Planet of COP26 and the new United Nations Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region. IDB has developed an action plan for approval at the beginning of 2023 whose objective is to incorporate natural capital and biodiversity in all levels of the institution.

Some of the ongoing initiatives that stand out are:
• Agreement with Natural Capital Lab (NCL) to deploy funds for the conservation of ecosystems
• Amazon Initiative, through which it seeks to incorporate regenerative activities in the Amazon basin in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Suriname.
• 100 million dollars debt-for-nature swap project in Barbados that channels 100% of savings toward conservation
