BCRA promotes survey to assess exposure and resilience of the financial system to climate change-related risks
08/28/2023 Since 8 months

The Central Bank of Argentina (BCRA) will promote a pioneer data collection process in Argentina that will allow assessing the exposures and resilience of the Argentine financial system to climate change-related risks. This initiative was ordered through Communication B 12618.

In a first stage, the BCRA will advance in a specific survey for the main entities of the Argentine financial system, contemplating part of the fundamental ideas that emerged globally within the framework of the standards for reporting information related to sustainability and climate dimensions (risks and opportunities) – IFRS – ISSB, S1 and S2-.

The local survey will focus on the group of the largest financial institutions (18 Group A banks) and will cover a sample of just over 1,000 companies that take financing from the financial system. The information obtained will be used to deepen the process of mapping and analyzing exposures to financial climate risks commonly referred to as physical and transition risks in the local financial system.

This work is carried out within the framework of the agreements reached between the Banking, Insurance and Capital Markets Regulatory Entities to promote the development of sustainable finance in Argentina (September 2021) and, more recently, in view of the publication of the results of the first National Survey on Sustainable Finance and Climate Change (May 2023) and the approval of the National Strategy for Sustainable Finance (June 2023).
