Cutting-edge data for agricultural resilience: IDB Invest introduces AGRIADAPT tool
12/13/2023 Since 7 months

A new IDB Invest blog post introduces AGRIADAPT, a tool created by IDB Invest that harnesses the power of data to help companies in the agricultural sector in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) to understand climate risks, offer them technical assistance and finance adaptation measures.

The tool is based on a state-of-the-art data set incorporating the latest global climate models (CMIP6) and crop data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), as well as more than 23,000 sets of data and 260 articles from scientific journals. It covers the entire LAC region territory.

Based on that data, AGRIADAPT breaks down climate impacts on agro-industrial sector operations, such as alterations in crop growth cycles, changes in productivity, damage to facilities or logistical and business interruptions. It generates customized reports on crops and livestock production, as well as facilities and transportation routes. It also provides specific information on climate impact and prioritizes adaptation measures.

Climate reports leverage Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to incorporate location-specific data to provide valuable information on climate-related impacts for 2030, 2050 and 2080, with projections for various possible futures.

Finally, the authors conclude that evidence-based and data-informed decision-making is a critical step in navigating climate change and, ultimately, implementing adaptation measures on the ground.
