European Union and Costa Rica agree on cooperation priorities and launch biodiversity protection initiative
06/01/2023 Since 11 months

The European Union (EU) Commissioner announced the launch of the EU’s Multiannual Indicative Programming with Costa Rica that includes 14 million euros financial support to strengthen the cooperation until year 2027. The programme will focus on three priorities: i) decarbonization, ii) digitalization and innovation, and iii) support on refugees and migration issues.

The European Union and the Costa Rican Conservation Agency (SINAC) -part of the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE)- also launched a new project to boost the efficient management of biodiversity as part of EUROCLIMA Programme, in line with the country’s commitment to protect and conserve at least 30% of its territory by 2030. The project will contribute to the maintenance and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystem services through sustainable management and the implementation of Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) as part of Costa Rica’s climate change adaptation strategy.
