A recent post in IDB Invest blog explores the several reasons why blue bonds are a good investment. Blue bonds are a subcategory of green bonds, that are intended to finance projects that contribute to the blue economy, conserve and restore the ocean, and exploit the potential of sustainable marine industries, such as fishing, aquaculture, and renewable energies.

These reasons include: i) transparency and traceability; ii) positive environmental impact; iii) access to new markets; iv) improvement of risk management practices; and v) attractive investment returns.

The post also describes the case study of Banco Bolivariano from Ecuador, which issued a 80-million dollars blue bond for sustainable projects related to seafood products, water management, wastewater and solid waste, and circular economy initiatives.
