Roadmap for a Green Taxonomy in Chile
08/17/2022 Since 2 years

The document “Roadmap for a Taxonomy in Chile” was prepared by the Climate Bonds Initiative (CBI) in association with the Chilean Ministry of Finance, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Public-Private Green Finance Roundtable of Chile, with the support of the German International Climate Initiative (IKI). The taxonomy consists of a sustainable/green classification system that facilitates the allocation of capital flows towards activities and projects that contribute to a country development capable of integrating environmental, economic and social variables, meanwhile serving as a guideline for climate-aligned investments.

The main purpose of such roadmap is to contribute to green finance promotion by making a preliminary assessment of the appropriate approach to developing a taxonomy at the local level. The document explains the conceptual aspects for the development of a taxonomy, the related international benchmarks and their possible implications for Chile and the necessary steps to develop a national taxonomy that serves as a tool for promoting markets and sectors aligned with climate commitments and GHG neutrality. Several key sectors of the Chilean economy such as Construction, Energy, Transportation and Mining were analyzed as examples to perform a basic gap assessment.
