UPME assigns transmission capacity to renewable energy projects for 7.5 GW
03/06/2023 Since 1 year

The Mining and Energy Planning Unit (UPME) of Colombia has announced the allocation of transmission capacity to the Interconnected System to 834 requests for connection of power generation and consumption projects based on renewable energy equivalent to 7.5 GW of maximum capacity.

Of the total assigned capacity, 5.8 GW (77%) correspond to solar energy projects, 1.2 GW (17%) to wind energy, both onshore and offshore, while the remainder corresponds to 7 hydroelectric projects and 1 new biomass project. Emissions reduction was one of the technical criteria evaluated for capacity allocation.

The results will contribute to the change of the Colombian electricity energy matrix, and will benefit end users, with a more reliable system supported by technologies based on non-conventional renewable sources.
