A new report on sustainable debt markets from Climate Bonds Initiative (CBI) revealed that green bond market hit the 2 trillion dollars milestone at end of Q3 2022, reaching 3.5 trillion dollars in total issuance considering also social, sustainability, sustainability-linked and transition labelled bonds (GSS+). CBI screens self-labelled bonds issued globally and only includes bond issuance demonstrating climate ambition aligned with the Paris Agreement in its Green Bond Database.

The total GSS+ volumes reached 152.3 billion dollars in Q3 2022, a decline of 35% compared to Q2 2022, and 45% compared to Q3 2021, mainly affected by geopolitical tensions and rising inflation. Though 2022 has seen a decrease in global bond volumes, the share of GSS+ issuance has remained unchanged from its 2021 contribution (5% of all global debt issued).

CBI calls for the market to scale GSS+ labelled issuance to a volume of 5 trillion dollars per year by 2025 to fight climate collapse.
