Brazil to Improve urban management and housing in vulnerable areas of Recife
01/13/2023 Since 1 year

Brazil will receive a 23.5-year term loan for a total amount of 260 million dollars from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) with the aim of improving housing conditions in vulnerable areas of Recife (capital of Pernambuco state in northeastern Brazil).

Recife is one of the most threatened cities by climate change, given its geographical condition. It is estimated that vulnerable areas currently represent 20% of the total area of Recife and 30% of the built-up area. About 56% of the households in the city have no access to sanitary sewerage services and 10% have no drinking water.

The program seeks to facilitate access to infrastructure, urban facilities and social services for low-income communities. Additionally, it aims to minimize the risks of natural disasters such as landslides and floodings. Also, an integrated management system for urban, housing, and socio-environmental data will be launched, and a municipal urban risk monitoring system will be structured.
