Chile launches Long-Term Climate Strategy that sets the path to be carbon neutral
10/26/2021 Since 3 years

The Ministries of Environment, Science and Energy of Chile presented the Long-Term Climate Strategy (ECLP in Spanish), a roadmap that establishes the sectoral objectives and goals for Chile to be carbon neutral and climate resilient by 2050.

The ECLP set specific goals and actions to be taken by the country, establishing priorities by sectors and years of compliance. In total, there are 407 transition and transformation goals in key sectors. By 2025, for example, the removal of 65% of coal-fired generation from the national matrix, adding between 10,000 to 15,000 hectares of protected urban wetlands, among others. Additionally, by 2050, some of the goals are a 100% zero emissions energy matrix, reducing emissions from industry and mining by 70%, and that 30% to 50% of threatened species have Recovery and Management Plans.

The ECLP establishes maximum emissions by economic sector, necessary to meet the national budget for maximum carbon emissions for the 2020-2030 period of 1,100 million tons of carbon, committed by Chile in its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).
